What to know before signing
Third-party liability insurance is mandatory in Mexico. It is not an optional extra at the counter: the law requires it, and foreign credit card policies do not replace it. An unusually low rate almost always excludes that insurance and adds it on arrival.
Ask for a written breakdown before signing: daily rate, mandatory insurance, additional coverage, taxes, airport fee and security deposit. The deposit is held on your credit card and released a few days after the return.
Documents: valid driver’s license, official ID or passport and a credit card in the driver’s name. Some companies require a minimum age of 21 or 25 and charge for additional drivers.
Inspect the car with the agent and take photos of every dent or scratch before leaving the lot. Check the fuel level and the condition in which the car must be returned.
Driving in Quintana Roo
The airport sits on a 10.5 km access road off Federal Highway 307. Heading north, Highway 307 reaches Tulum in about 30 minutes and continues to Playa del Carmen and Cancún; heading south, it leads to Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar and Chetumal. Speed bumps appear without warning at the entrance to every town, and some jungle stretches have no cell signal, so download maps before you set out.
